Minimum strives to maximize the shooter experience

Developer Human Head Studios aptly named their latest third-person shooter "Minimum" for both its simplistic aesthetics and familiar gameplay, and although we live in a time where pixel-perfect graphics and involved storylines reign supreme, this PC title aims to prove that sometimes less is more.

With character models reminiscent of sketching dummies and the same old point and click mechanics we've all grown up with, "Minimum" heavily relies on an unfamiliar game mode and an engaging crafting system to draw players in. The game mode, named "Titan mode", will have teams escorting a giant to their enemies' base. Along the way you will have to balance your time between fighting enemies, taking down the opposing titan, upgrading armor and farming titan resources called "creeps." Now this is where the game turns into somewhat of a MOBA. Not surprising considering how popular the genre has become. The part in a match where teams must farm these titan energy sources is commonly referred to as the "creep farming" phase and has players scrambling to blast away as many of these critters as possible. Human Head Studios also took a page out of the Harry Potter series and created a golden creep that spawns during each farming phase. This unique animal, while not winning you the game, does reward you with far more titan resources than the regular creep. The combination of frantic animals running about on the screen and the advantage that destroying them gives each team makes for quite an exhilarating experience that adds a unique layer to an otherwise simple game.

Titans are the big guys and creeps are the little ones by their feet. Any questions?

However, as creep farming does merit the game some uniqueness, it also gives way to some insanely one-sided matches. To explain creep farming further, the basic premise is the more creep resources, or "souls" as I have brutally come to call them, each team collects the harder the titans are to take down. So, if team A collects 10 creep souls and Team Snicklefrits collects 34, Team Snicklefrits will have a beast of a titan on their side. This means that Team A will have to compensate by upgrading their armor and weapons. If they don't, skill alone will determine very little as far as the victory goes. It's not a huge deal, but it does get very aggravating to play on a team who thinks they're playing death match mode and refuses to farm creeps. Players will also get shot and stabbed in the back quite a bit during the important creep phase as their attention is heavily divided. Needless to say, the creep phase makes for an exciting game aspect that can result in back stabbing, overpowered titans or overpowered players.

Players can upgrade their armor by collecting crystals from fallen foes, creeps and titans. The nice thing about "Minimum" armor is that there are multiple designs that benefit the player in different ways. An armor piece called "berserker leggings" gives the player a boost to damage but also makes the player take more damage. "Knight leggings" give the player a buff to melee attacks. The better players do in matches, the more resource points they receive outside the match where they can buy blueprints to different armor pieces. This way, every player can play the game how they prefer and will only receive the means to make that armor in each match by how well they perform. It's a brilliant way to keep over leveled players from destroying "Minimum" newcomers as they will need to prove their skill in order to obtain what they created. Despite this, players who have played longer will have an advantage, but nothing too overboard. Weapons will also have unlockable blueprints. This will have players coming back for days, unlocking their most cherished combination of goodies to create the ultimate loadout.

Double samurai swords? This guy's got a Ph.D. in baddassery.

Titan mode and the unlockables are the driving force behind this game though, and although it makes for a more than enjoyable experience the rest of "Minimum" is just above passable. The game's music is nothing to write home about but at least adds personality to the cubic worlds. The aesthetic gives off a subtle Lego vibe that some will love and others will hate. The whole blocky look is popular right now, so it has that going for it, but it can be difficult for games to make their own. "Minimum" lies somewhere between successful use of simple graphics and "been there, done that,"

Gameplay variety comes in the form of team death match and a "wave mode" that pits players against fire fighters and dinosaurs. While the modes are fun and let you enjoy more fun with your friends, the true draw of "Minimum" comes from Titan mode. Everything else is the same version of almost every other shooter you've played before, except less unique. Lastly, I must say the themed maps offered in the game are pretty creative, but there needs to be more! This is one case where the developers took the game's name too far.

"Minimum" will set you back $10 on Steam, which is more than fair considering the amount of fun you'll be having. Just remember to invite some friends and don't expect too much from anything except Titan mode. If you take the game for what it is, you'll be smiling every second.

"Minimum" gets a 7.5 out of 10. It's not bringing anything new to the table, but for $10 dollars, fun is all you'll need.

Batman: Arkham Knight & How I missed the last generation

By now, I'm sure all of you know and are already going crazy over "Batman: Arkham Knight." It was showcased at this year's E3, and garnished much media attention. This really doesn't come as much of surprise considering how well both of  "Arkham Knight's" predecessors did("Arkham Asylum" sold almost 2 million copies in its first three weeks of release, and Arkham City sold 2 million copies in its first week of  release, making it one of the fastest selling games ever.)

Dat Batmobile thooooo.....

I was watching this trailer on YouTube and thought about how cool it was that developers, Rocksteady Studios, added in the Batmobile, one of Batman's gadgets he didn't have access to in previous installments. I toyed with the idea of picking up the title and began to become excited for the game's 2015 release, but the funny thing was, besides a few play sessions on a friend's "Arkham City," I had never played OR owned "Asylum" or "City." The most I had ever really done with the popular franchise was watch my friend play it for hours on end. Leveling up, unlocking new gadgets and tediously searching for riddler trophies, my buddy seemed to really enjoy the game; and for the little I played and the large portions I watched, it seemed to be a game I would thoroughly enjoy too. I knew many people found the games to be engaging and fun. I knew I would like the combat. The voice acting was top notch (Mark Hamill, Mark Hamill, Mark Hamill), and the art style was dark and stylized like any good Batman game should be. I just never took the time to pick it up and let myself have fun with it. That got me thinking...

"With such a popular game as "Arkham Asylum" and Arkham City," how could I have missed it?"
"What other great games did I miss from the last generation?"

I always thought gaming's last generation(PS3, X360, Wii) was a tad bit lacking on software selection. But was it really? From there, I tried to make a mental list of all the games I'd wanted to pick up, whether it be out of pure hype or actually researching a game and liking what I'd seen(hopefully the 2nd). Here's the list that I came up with.

  • "Arkham Asylum" and "Arkham City"
  • "Red Dead Redemption"
  • Gears of War series
  • The Uncharted series
  • The Bioshock series
  • "Mad World"
  • "No More Heroes"
  • Mass Effect series
  • "Skyrim"
  • Just Dance series... joking... I totally play that one...
But seriously, look at all of those games! Like, really? All of those titles looked great to me. And not in the way where you see a trailer and pray the rest of the game will be as good. I looked up gameplay, asked friends, read reviews and played some demos. Everything pointed toward a purchase. I just didn't get around to actually grabbing the goods.Naturally, school and work get in the way again with it's stupid homework and self-betterment bologna! Such wasted potential. The good news is that I can get most, if not all, of this stuff for a steal now!

It just sucks that I waited this long, because a considerable amount of enjoyment that comes from buying a game is experiencing it with the rest of the people who picked it up around the game's release. I just have to remember that for the remainder of this generation.

In the end, my point is that if you love games and want to play something, you should stop at nothing to do so. Borrow from a friend. Trade in games you don't want anymore *cringe* Gamestop *cringe*. Actually fork over the dough to obtain a decent title . I don't care how you do it, just do it. Because now that I'm really enjoying this generation, it makes me wonder just how much I missed from last generation.

Now that I've come to terms with my foolish, neglectful behavior all that's left to do is wait to get my grubby hands on the new stuff and play the old stuff while I wait for it. I won't let Batman slip away this time! This should be good news for any of you that watch my stream. For those of you who don't and would like to- my stream is twitch.tv/justanotherhero4711. I think I might start with Arkham City or Red Dead. Hmmmmm... Dark Knight or deadly desperado. Decisons, decisions.

Take care and play on, everyone!

Smash Update! 7/14/14: Lucina/C.Falcon/Robin reveal trailer

Well, I pretty much said it all in the video, but it's pretty bonkers that the number of Fire Emblem characters doubled. Not many YouTubers, that I saw, predicted more than three, but I'm kind of glad it happened this way. While I did want Chrom in the game, there was a much greater need for a magic user represented in the FE series and, even more importantly, a female is represented! Sakurai said there are only a few more character reveal trailers left, but that doesn't necessarily mean there won't be anymore newcomers after the final reveal trailer is shown. I've estimated about 43 characters in the past, but now I think it's much more likely that the number of characters will reach right around the 50 mark. The more the merrier! WEll, I hope you all enjoyed the reveal and keep your eyes peeled for more stuff from me. I'll see you all later! Hero out.

Borderlands 2 Preview- Why Fix it If It Ain't Broke?

After watching one of the many gameplay videos for Borderlands 2 I have come to the conclusion that this is going to be very similar to the first one. If you don't believe me see for yourself in this video. See? Told you, jackass. Now, the real question is and will always be whether or not this is a good thing. For the betterment of gaming, this is terrible, for fans of the series who wanted a straight up sequel... well let's just say there's a lot of people creamin' their pants right now.

The story revolves around something or whatever and the main character needs to kill bad people. Easy enough. I remember playing Borderlands and loving the gameplay, but by the end I wasn't really sure why I was so happy that I won. It was just... "Yay, I won.". That's ok, I loved the gameplay so it made up for it, but for people who disliked the first game because of the forgettable storyline you might want to steer clear of this one.

As far as the gameplay goes it looks like the face-shooting, leveling up goodness is all still intact. Players still have a skill tree they can put experience points into and gain new abilities as their character grows. Vehicles are still present in the game and now come equipped with four seats instead of the two from the first game. The last game had one billion ka-jillion different guns... THIS ONE HAS TWO BILLION KA-JILLION GUNS. My point is everything from the first game is still there and it's more fleshed out in most cases, but there aren't too many new gameplay mechanics I've seen besides having a trade menu instead of having to manually drop weapons and having your partner manually pick them up. Nice additions, but nothing tremendous. Also, graphics are pretty much the same. No upgrades really, but for a game like this who cares. It's not Final Fantasy or Halo where that shit's pretty much expected.

I'm most likely going to pick this game up. I have a friend who'll sit there and share the experience with so hell I could probably just wait for him to get it and write something based on that, but I'm not by any means expecting this game to blow me away and quite frankly I'll be surprised if it's much better than the first one, but hey, this industry is based around sticking to formulas that work so what's the point of even complaining about one that does that once? I also know a game like this will have plenty of DLC's, one of which will include an additional character, so I'm not worried about a lack of content here either.

Overall, I expect this game to be pretty well received by critics and will most likely get scores that range from 8 to 9.5. If you loved the first "role-playing shooter" you're most likely gonna love this. Here's a couple of videos to hold you over until its release:
